Tranquility at Terme di Saturnia

3

I live forty minutes away from the famous Roman Baths in England.

Though I’ve always found it to be fascinating, I never expected that my first real roman bath encounter would be right here in the middle of beautiful and gorgeous Tuscany.

My husband and I arrived late at night in Saturnia, an ancient spa town in the province of Grosseto in the Maremma region.  The town draws its name from the Roman god of Saturn or Saturnus. Passing the sprawling hills and wine vineyards coming from our adventures in Rome and the Amalfi Coast, we didn’t know what to expect but we were certainly full of anticipation.  We’ve heard much about our destination, the warm sulphurous waters of Saturnia, which is well-known since the ancient times by the Etruscans and Romans.  This is all too typical for the ordinary Italian, but hailing from Los Angeles where Roman Baths are quite unfamiliar, it’s all too appealing and simply an experience not to be missed on a trip to Italy.

We finally arrived at our destination, the famous hot spring waters of Terme di Saturnia Spa & Golf Resort.  It is an exclusive and elegant hideaway featuring a natural hot springs born out of a volcano that specializes in healing and wellness.  We chose this to be one of our last stops during our trip to Italy since my husband and I knew that we needed to feel regenerated and pampered from all the explorations we’ve encountered in their charming country. This is also known as… “a vacation from our vacation”!

We happened upon Mr. Licinio Garavaglia, the most congenial General Manager we’ve ever met, as we were checking-in this fabulous country-chic resort.  He helped us gain inside recommendation on how to fully immerse in the experience of Terme di Saturnia. From this conversation, we’re very happy to share with all of you…

Styleat30’s Suggested Itinerary at Terme di Saturnia in Tuscany:

7:00 a.m.:  Wake up bright and early, put on a robe, and head out for a morning dip at the thermal baths.

7:45 a.m.:  Head over to the breakfast buffet area where you can enjoy a delightful and authentic Italian brunch with views of the medieval thermal bath.

9:30 a.m.:  Depending on when you finish brunch (Italians are known to take their time with meals), walk around the thermal park and enjoy the lovely Tuscan views.  This, in itself, is a true luxury.

10:00 a.m.:  Take another dip and really immerse yourself into the healing waters of the natural spring like the ancient Romans and Etruscans.

10:30 a.m.:  It is recommended that guests must not stay too long and allow themselves to go in and out of the thermal baths in order to reach a full and effective state of relaxation.  At this point, guests are encouraged to enjoy the waterfalls on site, or even read a book while lounging.

11:00 a.m.:  The sauna and steam room are available for all guests to use.  We spent quite a lot of time inside the indoor Roman Baths and submerged ourselves in tranquility.  We even dozed off in one of the indoor lounge chairs as we truly loosened up.

12:00 p.m.:  A quick dip before heading up to our suite in order to prepare for our lunch reservations treating ourselves to an authentic Tuscan meal.  If you haven’t had a Florentine steak yet (a favorite of the Medici family), I recommend trying it here as the Chianina is an unbelievable ancient cow breed raised in the Tuscan region.

3:00 p.m.:  By this time, you’ll be back and ready for another dip and perhaps even take an afternoon nap as you go in and out of the thermal baths.  This kind of spa day can be very beneficial for team building events, bonding sessions with friends and family vacations.

5:30 p.m.:  It’s now time to head up again to your hotel suite and get ready for dinner.  Don’t forget to make reservations at Terme di Saturnia’s Michelin-starred restaurant on site.

We were awoken with blissful views of the invigorating Italian countryside from our private balcony the next day.  True enough, with this kind of foolproof plan, we found ourselves enlivened with a genuine kind of energy and rejuvenation.  We repeated these steps on day two as we collected and composed ourselves, settling back and taking it easy.  Feeling right at home with the rustic elegance of Terme di Saturnia, we continued to take a breather and let it all soak in.  Stay tuned for more of the charm and relaxation this resort offers on my next post.
