Seasonal Wear for London & the U.K.

4

Spring in England can be insanely inspiring in the upswings of a beautiful and sunny day.

And though there are many days that have overcast, I am thankful that it’s slightly warmer and dryer than the bygone winter.  This is one of those times in the spring where we laugh for hours and revel outdoors in the newfound, early and bright sunrise-to-sunset days.  It’s sometimes mad to think that we’ve already spent two years in Great Britain.  My husband and I have just been moonstruck the moment we arrive with the charm and allure of Europe that our California days seem farther and farther away.  Nonetheless, California is our home and we do look forward to reconnecting with our roots.  Be that as it may, we are absolutely having the time of our lives and can only hope that friends and family can visit us more and discover the natural beauty of England.  For those planning visiting the U.K., here’s a list I gathered of recommended clothing to help you be as prepared in the British weather as possible.

Styleat30’s Style Tips on What People Wear in London and Other Parts of the U.K. All-Year-Round:

Winter (December, January, February):

  1. Wear leggings or tights under your trousers (pants mean something else in the UK) for extra warmth.
  2. Layer with high-neck sweaters, jumpers, sweater dresses, waterproof jackets, poncho cape coat, hooded wool trench coat, cable knit mittens and beanies. Layering allows flexibility when you go in and out of museums and other points of interests. Please note:  Umbrellas may or may not work in these months due to high winds.
  3. Waterproof knee-high or over-the-knee boots with rubber soles are perfect.

Spring (March, April, May):

  1. Layers are still important and do prepare to still double layer in some days, especially during the early spring.
  2. Light waterproof trench coats, hooded windbreakers, cardigans, travel umbrella, scarves, floral pants, and a fedora hat would be some spring wardrobe staple.
  3. Ankle boots, pointy flats, sneakers and, sometimes, you can even don a little peep-toe!

Summer (June, July, August):

  1. Cardigans and scarves are essential summer layers.  Don’t forget the sunnies!
  2. Everything you would wear in L.A. except prepare for the random summer rains here and there so still bring that light, waterproof, hooded raincoat or jacket.  No umbrellas unless you really want to look like a tourist!
  3. Bring out the heels, the sandals, or all your favorite shoes that has been collecting dust over the past year.  Watch out for those cobblestones though…!

Autumn (September, October, November):

  1. Black tights and trousers as well as thicker rain coats will be back on rotation.
  2. Leather dress, leather trousers, leather jacket, leather everything.  Suede skirt, skinny jeans, long sleeve shirts and dresses, loose cardigans and warm knit scarves.
  3. Penny loafers, suede ankle booties, and cross body bags will make the transition smoother for sure.

If you’re planning a trip to England and you’re not used to the cold weather, just plan as if you’re going to a place where it’s “winter” year round when it may snow.  The weather could get moody and you can wake up thinking you’re in Hawaii and sleep as if you’re in Iceland.  Being prepared and having a proper hooded coat will take you a long way.
